Why do diamonds with the same grade look different?

Two diamonds can share identical certificates and look nothing alike. The number that explains why never makes it onto the paperwork.

A diamond's certificate tells you a lot: carat, color, clarity, symmetry, polish. What it won't tell you is what the stone actually looks like on your hand.

The 4Cs measure quality. They don't measure shape. Two diamonds can share identical grading and still look nothing alike in person — the difference lives in a number most certificates never print at all: ratio, or length divided by width. The higher the number, the longer and narrower the silhouette. The lower the number — closer to 1 — the more rounded the stone reads. No certificate calculates it for you. You do the math yourself, or you don't know it at all.

Put two 3-carat ovals side by side — same carat, same grade — and the gap becomes obvious. One measures 10.6mm x 6.83mm, a ratio of 1.56: elongated and dramatic. The other measures 9.9mm x 7.3mm, a ratio of 1.35: rounder and more compact. Same paperwork. Two different diamonds.

Ratio carries the most weight on elongated shapes — oval, cushion, emerald, radiant, pear, marquise — anything longer than it is wide. On round or square stones, it barely moves. On these five, it's the whole story: on the hand, a higher ratio elongates the finger while a lower ratio sits more grounded; for the setting, it shapes how the stone proportions against the band; and for the style, it's often the number that tells you whether a stone is sleek and modern or soft and romantic.

The certificate tells you what a diamond is graded. Ratio tells you what it will actually look like on you. Ask for it — or calculate it yourself before you decide.
